The timing belt is responsible for keeping your vehicle's crankshaft and camshaft rotating at a synchronized rate. If the belt fails, your engine will shut down and can become damaged. This can lead to you being stranded on the side of the road and paying an expensive repair bill.
Your owner's manual will advise you on how often your timing belt should be changed, but it's usually between 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If you hear any high-pitched shrieking or noises coming from under the hood, it's a good idea to check the belt or take the car in for service. If you notice any staining or fraying on the belt, it might be time to change the belt, tensioners and pulleys.
