Honda has already conquered the hybrid market, with exciting additions to the auto world including Insight and the all new CR-Z Sport Hybrid. Now, he Japanese auto maker takes on all-electric. Honda Motors has announced the launch of its Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program.

The plug-in hybrid is "intended to be compatible with ones daily driving habits," according to the company. "The user will get the advantage of taking short, frequent trips in its all-electric mode, while also utilizing the long-distance driving capabilities when needed."

Honda's two-motor system flows consistently through three modes: all-electric, gasoline-electric and engine direct-drive mode. This maximizes driving efficiency. Honda's plug-in also uses regenerative braking to charge the battery.

In all-electric mode, the Accord Plug-In Hybrid uses a 6kWh lithium-ion battery and a 120 kW electric motor, to achieve a range of about 10 - 15 miles in city driving, with a top speed of 62 mph. Honda's battery can be fully recharged in 3 to 4 hours, using a 120-volt outlet, and 1 to 1.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet.

Designed for mid-size to larger vehicles, these hybrid motors will be introduced in 2012 Honda vehicles. The Japanese auto maker previously revealed the next-generation two-motor hybrid system  plug-in platform at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.
