What does oversteering or understeering mean? These terms refer to the sensitivity that a specific vehicle has to its steering. Understeering happens when the car does not steer as much as what the driver has intended. Oversteering is the opposite and means that the car steers more then what is intended by the driver.

Lateral Acceleration and steering angle are what determines both of these types of outcomes. Understeering seems to be a characteristic of a front-wheeled drive. The wheels seem to continue going straight even though the driver has turned the steering wheel to turn. Oversteering happens mostly with rear-wheeled drive vehicles. It might cause the back end of the vehicle to fishtail and spin out.

Given the right set of circumstances, both types of vehicles can experience both types of steering. These situations also are most likely to happen when a vehicle is equipped with a very powerful engine.
